Biesca: Protecting the value of Asturian forests

Low impact forestry in the Asturian forests to help the brown bears while maintaining climate benefits

Asturian forests host an astonishing wealth for Spain. Their rivers nourish populations and species, and the endangered brown bears roam there. Biesca Ingenieria, the forest steward leading this work, is committed to low impact forestry, to help the brown bears and maintain the climate benefits these forests give to the local communities and the planet.

Monte del Pico Sacro: Educating for the future of Galician forests

Partnership for forest management to generate positive climate and biodiversity impacts

Transferring knowledge about forests and their good management is a fundamental task. The Galician Forestry Association has been working with Selga, the forest steward managing this forest, to show how good practices generate positive climate and biodiversity impacts. They are actively looking for sponsors that want to expand good forestry practices and impacts all over Spain.

Palancares: Protecting a natural monument in the heart of Spain

Sustainable forest management in the foothills of the Iberian System helps to protect flora and fauna at a Spanish natural monument

When human interference is prohibited, a forest can mature naturally, and this is a prime example. Abundant dead wood and large, old trees offer a diversity of microhabitats for woodpeckers, bats, lichens, fungi, and wood decomposing insects which recycle nutrients.

By ensuring sustainable use and allowing recreational activities, the government of Castilla-La Mancha is preserving the forest’s remarkable biodiversity, landscapes and geological value.

Cañadillas, El Burdel and Peñascosas Altas: Biodiversity and climate protection in central Spain

Protection of forest biodiversity to protect the future of the forests in Toledo (Castilla-La Mancha)

Cañadillas forest, located in the mountains of the Toledo province, is significant to the local community because of the ash, poplars, and willows that flourish here. It is also home to many rare species like Bonelli’s eagles and black storks.

The government of Castilla-La Mancha, the forest steward in charge of this forest, is making significant investments to protect the area from fires. This is safeguarding the forest for future generation, not only living in the region, but also the country.

Devesa da Rogeira: Corazón Verde (Green Heart) of Spain – a forest of incredible biodiversity

Community stewardship that forest biodiversity for the future of Galicia (Spain)

Devesa de Rogueira is a small forest in the east of Galicia in northern Spain. It belongs to Enxeñería Forestal Asefor and the community from neighbouring mountains in Mano Común of Rogueira e Cabana. More than 70 years ago, local people decided that the value of the forest lay not in the timber they could extract from it but in the plants and animals that live here, and the ecosystem services it provided.

It is a unique natural enclave in Galicia and is managed by the people who live here. The forest is located in the UNESCO World Heritage site and offers picturesque views.

  2. Managed by ‘comuneros’ – the neighbouring communities who protect it from fires by grazing cattle
  3. Thanks to active forest management the fire that hit the surrounding forests and villages in summer 2022 did not affect Devesa
