You can participate in the consultations until 1st May 2026.BackgroundFor more than a decade, FSC’s requirements for Intact Forest Landscapes (IFLs) have been based on fixed protection thresholds. While these thresholds have helped safeguard large forest areas, they have also faced challenges in addressing complex and varied conditions across different regions. At the recent General Assembly in October 2025, members approved Motion 45/2025, reflecting a strong support for a new approach to IFLs. This approach focuses on maintaining ecological integrity beyond rigid thresholds and moves away from a binary view of intactness.Following the members’ decision, in December 2025 the FSC Board decided to fully implement this motion through the ongoing revision of the Principles and Criteria and International Generic Indicators (PCI). Meanwhile, interim measures aligned with the motion would begin in key countries with IFLs, with others encouraged to voluntarily apply these measures. The development of these measures has been carried out in collaboration with a Technical Working Group and is detailed in two separate and complementary Advice Notes currently open for public consultation:ADV-STD-60-004_02 V1-0 introduces enhanced requirements for how IFLs are managed and monitored, including the identification of key ecological features, the integration of Indigenous Peoples’ knowledge and rights, and the use of monitoring and adaptive management to maintain forest integrity over time. You can read more on the Process page.ADV-STD-20-007_18 V4-0 establishes interim protection thresholds and eligibility criteria, particularly for countries outside earlier pilot processes, helping to extend improved IFL requirements to a broader range of forest management contexts. You can read more on the Process page.Join our upcoming webinar to better understand and ask questions about the proposed measures outlined in the IFL Advice Notes. We look forward to your participation! Please register in advance for the webinar on Zoom. For comments or questions, please contact the Policy Innovation team at policyinnovation@fsc.org.
