FSC Joins the Fashion Industry Charter for Climate Action October 19, 2021 Category : General news United Nations (UN) Climate Change launched an initiative to propel the fashion industry towards immediate climate action. FSC is proud to be a signatory and supporter of the charter developed to deliver on these goals. As the threat of climate change intensifies, stakeholders in the fashion sector realized it was time to bring the industry into alignment with the goals of the Paris Climate Change Agreement. In 2018, under UN Climate Change, the Fashion Industry Charter for Climate Action was created with a mission to drive the fashion industry to net-zero Greenhouse Gas emissions no later than 2050, in line with keeping global warming below 1.5 degrees. Signatories of the charter commit to working towards its principles, including supporting the goals of the Paris Agreement, advocating for the development of policies and laws to empower climate action in the fashion industry, and striving for low-climate impact and low-carbon best practices in all levels of the supply chain. FSC is proud to be a signatory and active participant in shaping a sustainable fashion sector. The Fashion Industry Charter for Climate Action also involves working groups to help identify and amplify ways to change, strengthen, and further the fashion industry’s efforts to achieve its climate targets. FSC is participating in the raw material working group and carbon impacts working group, contributing our expertise in collaboration with other stakeholders and experts. "FSC is proud to have joined the UN Fashion Charter working closely with the industry to co-create solutions that deliver Climate benefits from forests and their ecosystem services," says Pina Gervassi, FSC's Climate and Restoration Engagement Director. FSC and Fashion Forest-based textiles and natural rubber, are increasingly being used in the fashion industry to make clothing and footwear. These materials can sometimes be sourced from high risk areas where deforestation or poor forestry practices are common. Such risks can be mitigated by sourcing from FSC certified forests and plantations. FSC is the world’s most trusted sustainable forest management solution that not only has environmental but social and economic benefits as well.
