El FSC y la bioeconomía circular

Circular transition does not happen automatically – it requires clear governance. Companies need to set strategies, track performance, and document progress to meet growing regulatory and market expectations. FSC already provides a strong foundation for verified ecosystem management and traceable material flows.

We are now exploring how we might better support measurable circular performance.

Circularity means keeping products and materials in use for as long as possible by designing them to be long-lasting, repairable, and recyclable.

It also involves enabling reuse, repair, leasing, and take-back systems so materials can circulate through multiple lifecycles.

FSC supports traceability and responsible material flows – and is exploring ways to enable reuse, take-back, and better fibre use.

Regenerative ecosystems are the foundation of both FSC and a circular economy, where circularity depends on protecting biodiversity, maintaining ecosystem functions, and sourcing renewable materials responsibly.

FSC delivers on this through our Forest Management standards and Verified Impact framework, embedding regeneration and long-term ecosystem stewardship into practice.

Eliminating waste means recovering valuable materials and returning them to productive use instead of discarding or burning them.

By replacing virgin inputs with recovered ones, companies can extend lifecycles and reduce environmental impact.

FSC supports this by enabling reclaimed materials to re-enter certified supply chains. To go further, FSC is testing a recognition framework for selected agricultural by-products to reduce pressure on forest and safeguard integrity.

Circularity must be fair and inclusive. It requires protecting workers, respecting Indigenous Peoples’ rights, and ensuring that benefits are shared fairly across value chains.

FSC already embeds strong social safeguards – and is exploring how circular systems can better include informal workers and reward long-term forest stewardship. In parallel, a royalty-based model could connect the value created when fibres circulate through multiple use cycles back to forest owners, rewarding healthy forest stewardship not just once, but over time.
