Blockchain Technology with game-changing potential FSC / Mayank Bhavesh Soni What is blockchain? Simply put, blockchain is a recordkeeping digital technology that registers transactions into a digital ledger that cannot be changed (a concept known as immutability). This allows anyone given access to the blockchain the ability to verify and audit transactions independently, even if that person is unknown to the other participating parties. Sunčane šume d.o.o. forests / Alberto Pauletto How blockchain can improve FSC’s supply chain We’re committed to finding new ways to leverage the latest technologies to enhance supply chain integrity throughout the FSC system. As a result of this exploration, we have launched the FSC Blockchain Beta pilot program. This “permissioned” private blockchain ledger platform is designed to verify materials trade compliance across FSC supply chains. We believe this secure, trustworthy self-service digital platform has the potential to transform trade compliance verification and traceability. iStock.com / poplasen The importance of materials compliance checks FSC trademarks are valuable to all our stakeholders. That’s why we work to protect our reputation and enforce our trademark rights by monitoring trademark compliance and investigating false claims. The information technology tools within FSC’s Blockchain Beta program allow for real-time monitoring to help us ensure that certified organisations are selling true, FSC-certified materials. 4 ways blockchain supports FSC integrity Permissioned ledgers Unlike public blockchains associated with cryptocurrencies, consortium blockchain ledgers (also known as “permissioned” private blockchain ledgers”) allow for access restrictions governed by parties’ permission to participate in the blockchain, even if the parties are not known to each other. Secure technology Paper record-keeping systems present the potential for fraudulent claims through tampering or falsifying documentation. Secure blockchain technology allows a departure from paper-based documentation and increases the ability to verify materials are FSC compliant. Access to all parties Blockchain connects trading partners for all parties handling materials down to the source. This allows for compliance verification of the materials as they move through the supply chain, without the need to reveal or even identify business relationships beyond those direct relationships an organization already has today. Real-time verification FSC-certified organizations are required to maintain up-to-date material accounting records of the certified materials they trade. Blockchain allows for instant viewing and sharing of information to ensure the authenticity of point-of-trade exchanges across the supply chain.
