We are looking for an engaged Program Manager Chain of Custody and Controlled Wood who brings solid expertise and a passion for FSC’s mission, to work with us in a multinational environment.

The Scope

The incumbent oversees the development, maintenance and consistent implementation of the FSC normative framework in the area of Chain of Custody (CoC) and Controlled Wood (CW). The incumbent reports to the Director Policy Operations.

Main Roles and Responsibilities

  • To lead, coordinate, and oversee the development, maintenance, review, revision and interpretation of:
    • normative documents for certification and accreditation;
    • FSC Controlled Wood risk assessments worldwide;
    • related guidance and training materials for stakeholders and users.
  • To lead, coordinate, and oversee the support for implementing CoC and CW requirements.
  • To streamline the relevant normative documents and requirements through means of simplification, outcome orientation, and integration of risk-based approaches.
  • To identify and evaluate innovative approaches for their potential of being adopted in the FSC normative framework through pilot testing, desk reviews and external studies.
  • To collaborate with PSU Engagement in the development and implementation of engagement plans for each major process.
  • To establish and implement effective and outcome-oriented work plans,
    • reflecting the FSC Global Strategic Plan as well as the program priorities;
    • identifying unit internal and external support needs as well as foreseen stakeholder inputs, while ensuring effective resource management.
  • To provide team members with appropriate structure, direction and feedback to ensure a high level of performance.
  • To coordinate activities within PSU and other FSC units as necessary.
  • To support fundraising and reporting to donors.
  • Any other task as agreed with the formal supervisor.

Key Performance Indicators

  • Work plans for the CoC and CW Program are implemented as planned and budgeted.
  • External key stakeholders are satisfied with the implementation of the Standard Operating Procedures applicable for the development, maintenance and implementation of the CoC and CW system.
  • High level of quality in implementing the relevant Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs).
  • High level of satisfaction and motivation of the staff under management results in accomplishment of the applicable organizational goals and objectives.
  • High level of productivity and quality of the program and staff under supervision.
  • Ensuring compliance with Health & Safety requirements of all staff under supervision.
  • Professional interaction with colleagues at FSC International.
  • Demonstrated commitment to the values and mission of FSC.
  • Well familiarized with the scope of FSC's programs.
  • Exemplary personal and professional authority and conduct.
  • High level of integrity and loyalty.

Qualification, Experience and Skills

Education and training:

  • University / technical college degree in forestry / wood technology or other relevant areas or equivalent experience, knowledge, and skills.


Working experience, style and skills:

  • At least 5 years of professional experience in one or more of the following: forest sector, multi-stakeholder standards development processes, certification, corporate environmental responsibility programmes.
  • Extensive project management experience.
  • Demonstrated strategic and leadership skills.
  • Good time management skills: Ability to perform well while handling simultaneously several functions.
  • Solution-oriented attitude to work.
  • A strong sense for diligence and accuracy.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.


  • Proven, professional strategic and technical abilities and leadership skills.

Languages & Communication Skills

  • Fluency in English (spoken and written).
  • Spanish is a plus.
  • Good communication and interpersonal skills.

Terms and Conditions

  • Location: Bonn, Germany.
  • Working Hours: Full time – 40 hours per week.
  • Duration of Employment: Temporary contract – 2 years (extension into permanent position foreseen thereafter).
  • Starting Date: As soon as possible.
  • Travel: Sporadic travel is required.
