FSC is an international organization that provides a system for voluntary accreditation and independent third-party certification. This system allows certificate holders to market their products and services as the result of environmentally appropriate, socially beneficial and economically viable forest management. FSC also sets standards for the development and approval of FSC Stewardship Standards which are based on the FSC Principles and Criteria. In addition, FSC sets standards for the accreditation of conformity assessment bodies (also known as certification bodies) that certify compliance with FSC's standards. Based on these standards, FSC provides a system for certification for organizations seeking to market their products as FSC certified.
This Glossary is a collection of the most frequently used terms and definitions that have been approved and are used in documents of the FSC Normative Framework, published in the English language.
This standard shall be used by all FSC-accredited certification bodies and FSC-accredited National Initiatives for the purpose of defining small and low intensity managed forests (SLIMFs) eligible for application of streamlined certification procedures.

The social impacts of forest management mean that forest management is a social as a well as a technical activity. It is not possible to involve all stakeholders in every forest evaluation. This standard specifies the requirements for FSC chain of custody (CoC) certification of projects. For the purposes of this standard a project is defined as the production or renovation of a construction or civil engineering project (e.g. an office building, a condominium of houses, event infrastructure such as concert stages, stand in a trade fair, timber bridge), individual art or decorative object (e.g. sculpture), or transport vehicle (e.g. maritime vessels) that is made of or contains forest-based materials.

The FSC Network Policy describes the framework and organization of the FSC Network. FSC's mission is to promote the environmentally appropriate, socially beneficial and economically viable management of the world's forests. It is increasingly recognized that association between FSC and organizations that are involved in unacceptable forest-related activities is harmful to FSC's reputation and ultimately to its ability to deliver on its mission. In order to address this concern, in March 2007 the FSC Board of Directors mandated the FSC International Center to develop criteria for the association of third parties with FSC.Through this policy FSC expects to be able to identify organizations not committed to the basic fundamentals of responsible forest management and prevent them from misusing their association with FSC.
The FSC Board of Directors approved the following as FSC policy in relation to 'stepwise', 'modular' or 'phased' approaches (referred to collectively as 'modular approaches') to forest certification, at its 37th meeting in June 2005: FSC believes that credible modular approaches to forest certification have the potential to make a major contribution to the promotion of environmentally appropriate, socially beneficial and economically viable management of the world's forests; It is critically important to ensure that modular approaches do not undermine the promotion of sustainable forest management by creating new labels and brands aimed at consumers seeking responsibly managed forest products.

This addendum lists temporary derogations for the use of pesticides that are considered by FSC to be ‘highly hazardous'.
