We are looking for an engaged Coordinator for Southern Africa who brings solid expertise and a passion for FSC’s mission, to work with us in a multinational environment.


The Scope

The FSC seeks a talented, entrepreneurial, result-oriented and experienced professional who will lead FSC’s activities in Southern Africa. The successful candidate will supervise a small team and will work closely within the larger FSC Africa and global team to help drive adoption of the FSC certification tools in sustainable forest management in the region. FSC Southern Africa includes the countries Angola, Comoros, Botswana, eSwatini, Lesotho, Madagascar, Malawi, Mauritius, Mozambique, Namibia, South Africa, Zambia, and Zimbabwe.

This role is therefore critical for the success of FSC in Southern Africa and reports directly to the Regional Director for Africa. It is an exciting yet challenging position in a rapidly evolving and heterogenous landscape. This is a multi-faceted role that includes spearheading FSC’s strategic and operational engagement in Southern Africa, engaging in high impact partnerships, capacity building and knowledge sharing. Some essential skills will include understanding of the certification process, marketing skills, resource mobilization to sustain operations and management skills to ensure compliance and high-quality delivery. As the ‘face’ of FSC in Southern Africa we will count on you to ensure a positive image and clear visibility to what FSC stands for. You will be a key member of the FSC regional and global senior management team, making meaningful contributions to help shape the future of FSC.


Main Roles and Responsibilities

Deliver results in Southern Africa

  • To lead the operational planning and implementation, monitoring and reporting (technical, administrative and financial) of FSC activities in Southern Africa, and ensure constant alignment of FSC engagement in the sub-region with the Global Strategy.
  • To define yearly objectives, performance measures and targets for Southern Africa. Ensure these are aligned with the regional priorities and Global Strategy and are linked to the performance expectations of your team members. Provide the necessary supervisory and technical backstopping to their roles.
  • To engage government, companies and communities to increase the number of FSC certificate holders and the size of FSC-certified forests in the sub-region.
  • To participate in resource mobilization for development of FSC projects in the sub-region and to ensure efficient and effective delivery of these projects.
  • To assess FSC’s potential to grow providing regularly updated data and insights on countries and market opportunities.
  • To establish and/or strengthen existing partnerships and networks to foster adoption of FSC certification as an innovative tool for Sustainable Forest Management (SFM) in the Sub-Region.
  • To represent FSC in public and private dialogues that promote the FSC brand, and FSC certification as a valuble tool for SFM.
  • To promote and support the collection of data and information which demonstrate the social, economic, and environmental impacts of FSC certification, and to support the generation of lessons and knowledge in contribution to sub-regional, regional, and global FSC knowledge base.
  • To lead awareness creation, marketing, and communications efforts in the sub-region to strengthen demand for FSC certification as a solution to unsustainable use of forest products.

Support FSC Members in Southern Africa

  • In conjunction with the Regional Membership Coordinator, the Southern Africa Coordinator will engage and maintain an active relationship with FSC Members in Southern Africa, solicit feedback and enlist their particular support for FSC to deliver.
  • Facilitate the engagement of new members to increase the strength and diversity of the FSC membership in Southern Africa.
  • In conjunction with the Regional Membership Coordinator, catalyze and support members engagement and preparation for contribution to and active participation in the FSC General Assembly, and active engagement in discussions or dialogues on policy and standards issues pertaining to forest certification matters and responsible forest management in general.

Represent FSC in national forest policy processes

The coordinator will act as a first reference point for FSC in all countries in the sub-region on stakeholder liaison and technical aspects of FSC certification, including:

  • To strengthen the links with country administration and forest stakeholders to improve the connection with and mainstreaming of FSC certification in policies and strategies in the country.
  • To support the FSC Technical team in the effort to work with the Government to develop a cooperative agreement to promote FSC certification as an instrument for sustainable forest management in each country of focus.
  • To facilitate synergies with forest sector related processes such as VPA-FLEGT implementation, EUTR, REDD+ National Strategy, and conservation programmes, etc.


Qualification, Experience and Skills:

Education and Training:

  • Master’s degree /qualification in forestry, natural resources or environmental fields is desired.

Working Experience, Style and Skills:

  • At least 5 years of professional experience in conservation, natural resources management, and sustainable development
  • Experience and proficiency in social and environmental standards setting and implementation, as well as corporate social responsibility (CSR).
  • Experience and understanding of Public-Private-Partnerships and their effective use to advance FSC goals in responsible forest management in the sub-region.
  • Proficiency and experience with country and sub-regional policy, legal and institutional context pertinent to forest governance.



  • Fluency in English (spoken and written) and ability to work in any additional local languages.



  • Experience working in a multi-cultural, multi-lingual, global team.
  • Experience working in / with an NGO or Non-Profit Organization.
  • Commitment to FSC’s mission and values.
  • Demonstrated cultural awareness and sensitivity to the diversity of values, views and approaches to issues relevant to the FSC program by stakeholders around the world.
  • Basic understanding of the scope of FSC’s programs and activities.
  • Ability to represent FSC through his/her work with exemplary personal and professional authority and conduct.


Terms and Conditions:

  • Location: South Africa. Additional location in Southern Africa might be considered.
  • Working Hours: Full time - 40 hours per week.
  • Duration of Employment: Initial 2-year contract with possibility of extension.
  • Starting Date: As soon as possible.
