Due to questions received in 2017 about the integrity of the FSC®-certified charcoal product type, investigations were initiated by FSC and ASI to determine the extent of the problem within the charcoal supply chain.

The investigation by ASI revealed a substantial number of volume mismatches between trading partners, and as a result, several certificates were suspended or terminated.

Due to these findings, it has been determined that transaction verification and mandatory traditional wood anatomy testing should be implemented for the charcoal supply chain.

Transaction verification began in October 2017. Once transaction details have been submitted by CHs ASI starts analysing them. The details for quarters 1 and 2 were submitted jointly by 31 July 2018.

Transaction details for quarter 3 were initially due on 31 October 2018, while data collection for quarter 4 was not yet required. However, FSC and ASI are now requiring transactions details for quarters 3 and 4 2018 to be collected together and submitted by the end of January 2019. Combining together the transactions for quarters 3 and 4 will help reduce the workload of all stakeholders and get new information to validate previous volume data.
