As the New Approaches Project Leader, Vera Santos will coordinate the activities aiming at designing an FSC certification system for, and by, smallholders.
New Approaches to Smallholder Certification is a project that was launched in 2016 to combine our 20-year experience in smallholder certification with current innovations and solutions, and the real needs of our smallholders. Ultimately the project should lead to a more successful approach that will enable smallholder to get a broader access to local and global markets while their certification should grow.
Vera will bring her ten-year experience as the FSC Portugal Executive Director and her expertise on smallholder issues to support the implementation of the new approaches – aligned with the FSC Global Strategic Plan 2015-2020.
Paul Opanga, our new FSC Manager for Labour Issues, also has a good knowledge of the FSC system. After three years and half working as the FSC East Africa Sub-Regional Coordinator, Paul will now create a space for cross-chamber and stakeholder dialogue and promotion of workers’ rights in FSC certification. He will engage with labour institutional policies with the aim to identify their relevance for FSC and to propose interpretations.
As part of his work as the Manager for Labour Issues, Paul will also work closely with members and other stakeholders in the set-up of a Solutions Forum on Labour Rights in FSC. This Solutions Forum is part of the FSC 2017 priority projects and is also directly related to Action 19 of our FSC Implementation plan.
Both Paul and Vera will work under the FSC Director’s Office and in close collaboration with the FSC International staff, FSC Membership and our stakeholders.
