FSC is happy to launch a pilot for FSC procurement claims. Any organization interested in participating can read the supporting documents and fill out the application form and submit it to the email address indicated on the form. Organizations selected to participate will be contacted by mid-January. The pilot will last until the end of 2023.
What is an FSC Procurement Claim?
If your organization purchases FSC-certified goods and materials for its own use or internal consumption, you might want to make this fact known. This is making a procurement claim. Right now, there is no way to verify the legitimacy of such claims, but the pilot project aims to be the first step in changing this.
Why should I join the FSC Procurement Claim project?
By becoming part of the two-year pilot process, testing the feasibility of procurement claims, and their verification based on a streamlined FSC Chain of Custody standard, your organization will be able to make procurements claims for purchases of FSC raw materials, and semi-finished products for chosen product categories. These claims come with the added legitimacy of participating in the project, rather than being made in an unverified setting.
How will the pilot project work?
Monitoring will be based on a baseline data collection, followed by quarterly and end of pilot reporting from participating organizations. The monitoring would look specifically at the impact on the FSC system, in particular on the following points below:
- The impact of increased procurement of FSC materials and FSC products
- How procurement claims are made and verified
- Test the use of FSC trademarks with procurement claims
- The plausible links between sustainable procurement and their resulting environmental, economic, and social benefits.
We are excited about testing out this new method for organizations to show their commitment to purchasing only material from responsibly managed forests and controlled sources.
