The #Together4Forests movement is calling on the EU to introduce a new law to tackle its contribution to global deforestation and to ensure that nothing sold in Europe contributes to forest or ecosystem destruction, or related human rights abuses. FSC is also pushing for a law which also protect the rights of Indigenous Peoples and local communities as they are recognised stewards of their lands and their knowledge is crucial to preventing biodiversity loss.

Anand Punja, FSC’s EU Regional Director, said: “FSC believes that a new efficient law will also make certification schemes more effective in tackling deforestation and the biodiversity loss. Mandatory approaches (law) and voluntary ones (schemes) are not mutually exclusive – but rather mutually supportive”.
