Due to questions received in 2017 about the integrity of the FSC®-certified charcoal product type, investigations were initiated by FSC and ASI to determine the extent of the problem within the charcoal supply chain.
The investigation by ASI revealed a substantial number of volume mismatches between trading partners, and as a result, a number of certificates were suspended or terminated.
Due to these findings, it has been determined that transaction verification and mandatory traditional wood anatomy testing should be implemented for the charcoal supply chain.
Transaction verification began in October 2017. Transaction details submitted by CHs for the fourth quarter of 2017 were due by the 28th of February 2018 and are being analyzed. The same process will occur for the first, second and third quarters of 2018 with the aggregated transactions by trading partner being due by the end of the first month of the next quarter. The details for quarters 1 and 2 are to be submitted jointly by 31 July 2018. Transaction details for quarter 3 will be due on 31 October 2018.
