This new grant, made possible by money raised by Dutch Postcode Lottery players, will be used by FSC International to decrease the risk and potential for deforestation. It will allow the FSC to invest in technology to create stronger incentives for responsible forest management through certification for forest owners of all sizes and types, all over the world.
Deforestation and forest degradation are leading causes of carbon emissions, biodiversity loss, and deteriorating livelihoods for forest-dependent peoples. However, responsibly managed forests have the potential to absorb approximately one-tenth of the global carbon emissions projected for the first half of this century (FAO, Role of Forests in Climate Change).
“We all recognize the vital and urgent need for responsible forestry and understand that this is an important step in combatting carbon emissions and fighting climate change,’’ said Margriet Schreuders, Head of the Charities department of the Dutch Postcode Lottery. ‘’We believe the Dutch Postcode Lottery players will be pleased that they have supported this cause.’’
“We are thrilled to have received this support thanks to Dutch Postcode Lottery players,” said Kim Carstensen, FSC Director General. “For over two decades, FSC has proven itself a powerful tool for accelerating responsible forestry, generating numerous social, economic, and environmental benefits. But we have more to do and I am confident the ‘Forest For All Forever’ project will support our cause. Urgent action is needed to address the increasing threats of climate change and meet the commitments of the 2030 Agenda.’’
The grant will be officially awarded during the Charity Gala (Goed Geld Gala) on Monday 4 March 2019 at the Koninklijk Theater Carré in Amsterdam.
