Explore the forests of Italy

Italian forests are home to a rich biodiversity and are essential due to their capacity for carbon storage, yet they are vulnerable. Explore Italian forest projects with verified ecosystem services below and consider incorporating old growth restoration into your climate strategy today.

Agris Sardegna: Indigenous fauna in certified cork forests

Natural regeneration efforts in FSC-certified oak cork forests

The regional agency for scientific research in forestry and agricultural services compromises 67 hectares of certified oak cork forests. This area is home to wild boars, hedgehogs, foxes, weasels, martens, and hares. Apart from all protective measures such as natural regeneration, the agency investigates physicochemical characteristics of the soil to focus on carbon stock.

ERSAF: Fostering biodiversity and qualitative water sources in the Lombardy region

Effective water and carbon management

The regional Authority for Agriculture and Forestry Services of the Lombardy Region (abbreviated as ‘ERSAF’ in Italian) is home to various birds, reptiles, insects, amphibians, and mammals. The water protection in this region assures improved quality of pH values and nitrogen levels of these sources. Since 2009 the ERSAF’s net carbon stock reached 3 million tons of absorbed CO2, which is comparable to the average annual emission of 184,000 cars.

Valdarno Valdisieve: Support of recreational functions and carbon conservation

Increased net carbon stock with sustainable forest management

For over 15 years the public entity of Unione dei Comuni Valdarno Valdisieve (UCVV) preserves forest areas equal to 2,400 football fields. Located in the centre of the country, this region is known for its scenic landscapes and beautiful vineyards. With the help of the FSC certification, the total net carbon stock increased over 20 per cent, reaching more than 650,000 tons of absorbed CO2 since 2004.
